She was a prominent actress in Malayalam film industry in the years 1980's to 1990's. Maathu's real name of which she was born was Madhavi. She is youngest of three siblings born to Venkit and Santhamma, Tamilian parents in Chennai.

She has an elder sister, Sarala, who was also a child actor and did movie Manassu. Even her aunt was a Malayalam film actress. She married Dr. Jacob, a Malayali based in New York on 12 June 1999. They are parents to two children, Luke, and Jeymi. The couple got divorced later in 2012.

She acted in nearly 50 movies.
