Valayar Ramavarma was an Indian poet and lyricist. He was a modern Malayalam lyricist as well as a poet. Some of his famous works are Padamudrakal, Oru Judas Janikkannu, Mulankaadu, Sargasangeetham, etc. Valayar was born on 25 March 1928, in a village of Valayar, Alappuzha, Kerala. His father was Vellarappally Kerala Varma while his mother was Raghavaparambil Ambalika Thamburatty. He was married to Chandramathi Thampuratti. Later he got married to Bharathy Amma, and they have four children together. Their son Vayalar Sarath Chandra Varma is a popular lyricist working for the Malayalam entertainment industry.
They also have three daughters, Yamuna, Indulekha, and Sindhu. Bharathy wrote Indradhanussin Theerathu, a book about his late husband, Vayalar. The book became controversial after it was published. Vayalar has written about 2000 songs that were showcased in almost 223 Malayalam films and various plays. He did poems about the revolution in the romantic notions. In addition, his poems talked about the power of science that took over religion over the years. His collaboration with Devarajan was the most talked about. The Valayar-Devarajan collaboration was very famous. Balikudeerangalae is one of his most popular songs. He wrote this song for the KPAC naatakaganam theatre.
His first poetic collection came in 1948. It was known as Paadamudrakal. Along with poetry collections, he also has written various Malayalam songs. His songs include Ente Chalachitragaanangal, which is in six parts. He also has story collections. They are Raktham Kalarnna Mannu and Vettum Thiruthum. He has written an essay called Purushaantharangalillode. His collected works include Valayar Krithikal and Valayar Kavithakal. For movies, Valayar has written songs like Butterfly Oh Butterfly, Onnu Pettu Kunju, Bhasmakkuri Thottu, Ithu Sisiram, Seemanthini Ninte, Thankathinkalthaazhika, Aham Brahmaasi, Kaadu Karuthakaadu, Ga Ma Dha Ni Sa, etc. The movies for which he has written songs are Thaamarothoni, Neelapponmaan, Athidhi, Sammaanam, Chuvanna Sandhyakal, etc.
Valayar has received many awards for his extensive poetic career. In 1961, he received Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award for Sargasangeetham. He received the Best Lyrics Award for his song Manushyan Mathangale, Srishtichu from the film Achanum Bappayum at the 1973 National Film Awards. He has received Best Lyricist Award at 1969, 1972, 1974, and 1975 Kerala State Film Awards. The Best Lyricist award he received in 1975 was for Chuvanna Sandhyakal, Swami Ayyappan. Valayar passed away on 27 October 1975 at the age of 47 in Government Medical College, Thiruvananthapuram. In memory of this great poet and lyricist, there is a statue in Thiruvananthapuram. In addition, in his native place Raghava Parambu, a memorial is made.
OS Unnikrishnan(born 1973) is a lyricist. He was brought up in Mundancavu, a small village in Chengannur of Alappuzha district, Kerala and is the only son of Shivasankara Pillai and Thankamma. OS’s father was a farmer and the family had to suffer financial crises.
He did his schooling at Kallissery High School, Chengannur, and pursued graduation from Christian College, Chengannur and Distance Education from Calicut University. OS Unnikrishnan is married to Jyothi and has three children: Gautham, Gouri, and Ganga.
The family lives in Umayattukara, Kallissery, Alappuzha, Kerela. OS Unnikrishnan loves writing and has composed wonderful songs. OS was an LIC agent by profession since 1999, but he kept chasing his dreams of becoming a lyricist and is now a very popular lyricist in Malayalam film industry.
OS Unnikrishnan’s life changed in Saraswathi Vaidika Gurukula Kendra founded by Acharya Narendra Bhoosan. Acharya Narendra Bhoosan helped OS learn Sanskrit and Vedic Philosophy. OS shifted his focus to Padayani which is a traditional folk dance and ritual art from Central Travancore and OS’s native place Mundancavu is famous for Padayani, so this made him more interested in this field.
Unnikrishnan said that the rhythm of Pamba river, mystic blending of music and dance in Padayni inspired him a lot which paved his way towards the Malayalam industry making him a popular lyricist. This school changed him into a selfless human being and from here he began to realize his dreams and talent of writing songs which led him to the Malayalam film industry and made him a very successful lyricist.
OS got an opportunity for the first time in 2010 in a thriller movie Avan, directed by Nandan Kavil. OS Unnikrishnan wrote many songs like Analakkannai, Thozha En Thozha, Vazhiyorathenno, Maayaathe Nilppu, Shadamgurapura, Agnijwaalayaay, Oru Kunjukaattin, Poy Maranjo in the movie Avan in 2010, directed by Nandan Kavil, and Ithra Pakalinodu, Aaranu Maanathe, Pularoli Pakarum in the film Lasagu in 2014, the director being Sumod Gopu.
OS has rewarded the Kerala State Film Award for Best Lyrics in 2014 for the film Lasagu directed by Sumod Gopu. OS Unnikrishnan is the rising star of Malayalam movie songs. He has got many films under his belt and also has penned down many songs. OS Unnikrishnan, even in his free time, prefers writing songs. He has already written many songs for upcoming movies.
