Kambisseri Karunakaran is an eminent Indian journalist, actor, politician, rationalist and satirist, who worked in the Malayalam film industry. He was born on March 31, 1922, in Alappuzha, Kerala. He is the Chief Editor of the Cine Rama, Janayugam Varika, Janayugam Daily, Balayugam and Noval Pathippu. Kambisseri is also a committee member of the State Film Awards. He had a close friendship with Thoppol Bhasi, a Malayalam director and playwright.
Some of Kambisseri’s writings include Aana Taxi, Anthya Darsanam, Koonanthara Paramuvum Poona Kesavanum, Kure Sambhavangal and the Kambisseri Kritikal, which is a collection of his writings that was published post his death in 1977. Kambisseri took the lead role in Paramu Pillai’s notable drama, Ningal Enne Communist Aakki in the 1950s and has acted in a series of radio dramas. He debuted as an actor in 1955 the Malayalam film, Kalam Marunnu, which was directed by R Velappan Nair. In 1961, he acted in the Malayalam film, Mudiyanaya Puthran. Kambisseri was later seen in Ninamaninga Kaalppadukal and KS Sethumadhavan’s Nithyakanyaka in 1963. He acted in P. Bhaskaran’s Aadyakiranangalin 1964 and Aswamedham in 1967. He consistently acted with the late Malayalam film actor, Sathyan.
Karunakaran died on July 27, 1977, at the Medical College in Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala. His wife said that his burial was held without any ceremonies. A junction near his residence was named as Kambisseri Mukku as an honor to him. A school in Vallikunnam was also named after Kambisseri.
