Sathyan aka Manuel Sathyaneshan is an Indian actor who worked for Malayalam films. He has a pretty good name in the industry, and people respected him duly. He has won the Kerala State Film Award twice and was renowned for his versatile acting skills. He is remembered for introducing and pioneering the realistic and natural style of acting in Malayalam cinema. Stating his personal life, he was born to Catholic parents.
Sathyan passed the Vidwan exam, equivalent to Master of Arts before joining Saint Joseph's School, Trivandrum as a teacher. Then he got a job in the Kerala Secretariat. Later he joined the army in 1941 and got posted as a Commissioned Officer of the Viceroy of India. He was married to Jessy. They have three sons named Prakash, Satheesh and Jeevan. He once happened to meet chief editor K. Balakrishnan and was successful in impressing him. Balakrishnan cast him as the protagonist in the film written and produced by him, titled Thyagaseema.
However, this film was never released. His first film Aatmasakhi was finally released in 1952. It was a mark in the Malayalam industry that has an authentic Malayalam story. It was awarded the Rajat Kamal Award. His other performances include Udhyogastha, Snehaseema, NairuPidichaPulivalu, VeettuMrugam. One of his characters Othenan became famous among the people. Till date, he has acted in 150 Malayalam and two Tamil films. He won the first Kerala State Award for his brilliant performance in Kadalpalam.
He was posthumously awarded the Kerala State Film Award for Best Actor in 1971 for his performance in Karakanakadal. He died on June 15, 1971, at Madras after a battle of 10 years with blood cancer. He was one of the superstars of the Malayalam Cinema. The way he showcased masculinity was worth praising.
