An Indian classical dance performer, choreographer, actress, and author, Kala Vijayan, was born on 8 May 1944 in Desamangalam village, Shomur, India. She is the daughter of the legendary Kathakali artist Kalamandalam Krishnan Nair and Kalamandalam Kalyanikutty Amma. She is trained in Mohiniyattam, Bharatanatyam, and Kathakali. She did her pre-university education at Maharaja’s College, Ernakulam. She received the Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Academy Award for Mohiniyattam in 1988 and the Kerala State Award for Mohiniyattam in 2019. She is currently the Principal Director and senior Guru at the Kerala Kalalayam, a fine arts institution established in 1952 by her parents.
She authored a book on Mohiniyattam titled Mohiniyattam: Ariyendath Ellam, published by DC Publishers in 2012.
