Shankar Singh was a writer, director, and producer in the Kannada Cinema and most importantly he was a freedom fighter. He was born in Mysore in British India. He was an employee at Brooke Bond Tea Company. Although he was fond of movies since the very beginning but he entered the film space owing to his association with B. Vittalacharya - a Kannada director. Shankar Singh was an ardent follower of Mahatma Gandhi. He along with B. Vittalacharya established two touring talkies namely: Jawahar Touring Talkies and Mahatma Touring Talkies that showed movies under a tent. In 1946, he along with his friend opened a production label - Mahatma Pictures which released its first movie Krishnaleela in the year 1947.
The production label went on to release movies like Bhale Kiladi, Nagakannika, and Bhakta Ramadas. Shankar made his debut in the world of direction with the film Jaganmohini in 1951, which was a commercial success. He was a pivotal figure in the freedom movements across the southern part of the country. It was because of his efforts and contribution that the government agreed to provide financial aid to the Kannada Cinema and later added a surcharge to the price of a movie ticket to aid the development of the industry. His body of work includes films like Prabhulinga Leele, Muttidella Chinna, Shivalinga Sakshi, Bangarada Kalla, Raja Satyavrata, Jwala Mohini, Daiva Sankalpa, Mangala Suthra, Aashadaboothi, Maadiddunno Maharaaya, Sowbhagya Lakshmi among others.
