Born on April 18th, 1962, Poonam Dhillon is one of the three children born to an aeronautical engineer father and a mother who was principal of a school. She has one brother and a younger sister, both of whom are in the medical profession. She has two children, Anmol and Paloma, from her marriage with
Ashok Thakeria
, which lasted till 1977.
Poonam, standing tall at 5’6”, had her first tryst with fame on winning the Miss Young India title at the age of 16. Thereafter, she was cast by
Yash Chopra
in her debut film Trishul in 1978. That was the beginning of a fulfilling career in films wherein she acted in about 90 movies in Hindi and several in regional languages. She was nominated for Filmfare Award for Best Actress for Noorie (1979).
Hindi theater also attracted Poonam a lot and her play “The Perfect Husband” won the Best Comedy Play Award in 2005.
Poonam Dhillon ventured into the arena of the small screen, with the serial Andaaz.
Thereafter, she was part of a wellness TV series by the name of
Chusth Durusth
aired by Zee TV. She has appeared in the Showbiz India Celebrity Profile (2005) and as a contestant in
Bigg Boss
(season 3). Currently, her serial

on Sony TV is a big hit. Her presence on Comedy Nights With Kapil as a guest along with Dharmendra was also notable.
Poonam is a versatile personality. She ventured into the Make-up Van Business, and was a pioneer of the concept for the Indian Film Industry. Her company is called Vanity. She is also pursuing her academic interests, alongside, and is doing MBA in International Business. Poonam has recently launched an event & film production company by the name of Poetic Justice Films Ltd. She is Consulting Editor with Zeenext.com. To guide young aspiring actors, she launched a web portal in 1997 titled “Star Ya Kalakar”. Poonam had a stint in politics too wherein she joined Congress party in 2004.She is actively involved with social causes such as Drug Awareness, Aids Awareness, Family Planning and Organ Donation. She is recipient of Priyadarshini Award for recognition of contributions in the social work sector.
