Nimmi is the famous Bollywood actress who was at the peak of popularity during the 50s and early 60s. She was born in the year 1933 as Nawab Banoo. She was born to Abdul Hakim, a military contractor and Wahidan, a versatile actress cum singer in Agra. As her mother was a popular singer, she had a good relationship with the popular musicians in the cinema industry. One among the popular cinema people is Mehboob Khan, who was famous for making the movies. Nimmi’s mother died suddenly due to ill health and Nimmi was forced to live with her granny. Nimmi’s aunt Jyoti was a popular actress and her husband Durrani was also in the music field. Nimmi stayed with them. Once, her family friend Mehboob Khan asked her to watch the shooting of the movie Andaz, which was performed by Raj Kapoor. Raj Kapoor recommended Nimmi for his next film Barsaat to play opposite Prem Nath. The film got released in 1949 and hit the box office. With her unique style of acting, she was offered many films, and Nimmi was very selective. In the film Bedardi, Nimmi sang for herself. This is the only film, she sang. She was one among the proud artists, who were a part in India’s first Technicolor movie Aan. In 1954, she performed opposite Dilip Kumar in Amar. Though the film was not a commercial success, Nimmi was lauded by the critics and the audiences. With the film Danka, Nimmi took the role of a producer too. Her performance was excellent in that movie and she was lauded well. Love and God was the last movie performed by Nimmi. It was released in 1986. She avoided the offers and kept herself away from acting. Nimmi married Ali Raza, who was a popular screenplay writer in the Hindi films. This couple lived happily for 42 sweet years and Ali Raza completed his life journey in 2007.
