Sharman Joshi was born in Mumbai, Maharashtra to a Gujarati Brahmin family. He comes from a family of Gujarati and Marathi theatre actors. He is the son of Arvind Joshi, a popular name in Gujarati theatre and his aunt, sister as well as cousins, are known Gujarati and Marathi theatre actors. Sharman Joshi’s sister is

Rohit Roy, and both are TV actors and are recognized for the roles they have played. His spouse is Prerana Chopra, the daughter of
Prem Chopra and Uma Chopra. He has three children, an elder girl Khyana and twin boys, Varryan and Vihaan. Apart from starring in some hit films in supporting as well as leading roles, he has himself done theatre for a few years. His play, ‘
All The Best’, in which he plays a deaf boy did 550 shows in about three years. He made his debut in Bollywood in 1999, with the film, Godmother, in which he acted alongside
Nirmal Pandey and Milind Gunaji.
He also did the movie ‘
Lajja’ which is based on the deplorable situation of women in our country, in the same year. He then gave his first commercial hit in the year 2001 with N. Chandra’s film, Style, which starred other debut actors like
Sahil Khan, Shilpi Mudgal and
Riya Sen. He is still remembered as Chantu from that film and managed to make us all laugh with his performance. He also played the lead in its sequel, Xcuse Me in 2003 but wasn’t as successful as its prequel. He has been a part of many multi-starrer films. His next film was Shaadi No. 1 which is a comedy movie about three men unhappy with their married life. After this, he showed a change in the genre of films picked as he went on to do ‘
Rang De Basanti’ in 2006 which was a landmark film, critically acclaimed as well as commercially successful in which he played the lovable ‘Sukhi’ and won a lot of hearts! He had another hit in the same year, the laughter riot, ‘
Golmaal’, for which he had also been nominated for a Filmfare Award. He continued with the movies Raqeeb, Dhol, Hello and then Sorry Bhai, which portrayed him in an entirely different role. His most famous and most appreciated film has undoubtedly been, ‘
3 Idiots’ for which he had also been nominated for a Filmfare Award and won an IIFA Award, adding another accolade to his career.
He played the lead in other successful films like ‘Ferrari Ki Sawari’-which is about a father’s struggle to fulfil his little son’s dreams, ‘
War Chhod Na Yaar’-a comical take on a situation of war between two neighbouring countries. The very recent flick is the ‘
Hate Story 3’ where we saw him in a new and unexpected avatar, and he didn’t fail to surprise us with it! Apart from doing films, he has also hosted a TV Game Show, PokerFace: Dil Sachcha Chehra Jhootha, based on popular UK TV Show Poker Face. He has also appeared in some TV commercials of Nokia, Perk, Airtel, 7Up.
