Vasan Bala, born and brought up in Mumbai, India is a filmmaker and screenwriter. Movie making and script writing seem to be in his blood since both his father and grandfather were movie buffs. They introduced Vasan to movies like ‘Django,’ Mackenna’s Gold,’ ‘ Ben Hur,’ ‘Enter the Dragon.’ His finished his graduation in commerce and took up law. However, he dropped out of law college and worked in various corporate jobs. He grew tired of this too, and finally quit in 2006. All this shuffling between jobs had made his passion take a backseat. After quitting, he had the chance to meet the famous director Anurag Kashyap. This meeting left him motivated, and throttled his ambition to become a filmmaker. He made his directorial debut with a Hindi crime thriller film called ‘ Peddlers.’ It had Gulshan Devaiah, Nimrat Kaur, Kriti Malhotra in lead roles.

The movie was screened at the International Critics Week, which is a film event. The film generated nearly one Crore when it’s producer posted the script on Facebook. The spectators at the Cannes Film Festival were happy with the plot of the movie, and said that Vasan had proved himself with his debut movie. ‘Peddlers’ was also nominated for Golden Camera Award at the Cannes Film Festival. Apart from his debut movie, he was also the assistant director in films like ‘Dev D,’ ‘ Gulaal,’ ‘ Trishna.’ Vasan also played minor supporting roles in movies like ‘ Aamir’ and ‘ Ugly.’ He proved his mettle in dialogue writing in ‘ The Lunchbox’ and ‘ Rukh.’ He received his big break in Bollywood with the movie ‘ Bombay Velvet’ which was a period crime drama. He has written various short movies like ‘Bunny,’ ‘Geek Out.’

In an interview with a prevalent newspaper, he stated that Anurag Kashyap had played safe with him, and it was not until he saw Peddlers that he wanted to work with Vasan. He sounded hurt when he said Anurag Kashyap had called him immature. Vasan also had regular fights with Anurag on the sets of his movies. His next movie ‘Raman Raghav’ was said to be murdered by Anurag Kashyap’s self-indulging attitude. The story had been written by Vasan Bala. Released in the year 2016, it was a psychological thriller based on a psychopathic serial killer having the same name. It cast Nawazuddin Siddiqui as the psycho serial killer. Although, it premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, it is said to have done well at the box office and received positive reviews.
