Andrew Upton

Andrew Upton is an Australian director, screenwriter and playwright .He is currently the co-director and co-CEO of Sydney Theater Company .He was born on February 1, 1966 in Sydney, Australia .He is known for his movies like The Turning(2013), Stories of lost souls(2005) and Gone(2006).In 2014, Upton was awarded the Rotary Professional Excellence Award, an award to honour, a person who has proved consistent professional excellence over a long time in his or her field. Andrew did his schooling in Paramatta, at the King’s School. He did lots of theater in school and participated in various playwrights’ conferences .He got enrolled in an arts degree at the University of Sydney, where he worked as a director in the dramatics society which brought him more closer to theater .

Following his passion in directing he left the arts degree at the University of Sydney and went on to do a diploma in directing from the Victorian College of Arts .After graduating, he moved back to Sydney in search of work. The person responsible for the start of Upton’s success story at STC is Marion Potts .Potts had suggested Upton to then STC artistic director Wayne Harrison for the post of adapter for Cyrano de Bergerac that Potts was to direct in 1999.

The play was released and was a huge hit .Nevin, Harrison’s successor, was very impressed with Upton and commissioned him to write a play. At this time Upton had realized that his adaptations have greater success than original plays. So he continued working on adaptations .Later Upton and Blanchett formed a film production company, Dirty Films and produced films like Bangers(1999) and Little Fish(2006), both starring Blanchett .Upton is a man, who is pretty less known in Australia than Cate Blanchett , but he is comfortable with his achievements ."It has never been something that bothered him”, says Louise, Upton’s sister .He thinks that being a writer, this relative anonymity is a blessing .And the people who know him well always mention his intelligence, knowledge, passion for new ideas and the unquenchable thirst for theater making.
