Jo Van Fleet is an artist who performs in theaters and films. It was the beginning phase of color pictures, allowing her to act in black & white, as well as RGB colors. She was born on December 30, 1914 (registered as December 29, 1915), in Oakland, California. Jo was born to Roy Van Fleet who was from Michigan (1877 to 1919), and Elizabeth Catherine Gardner from Indiana (1881 to 1971), as their only child.

Jo Van Fleet pursued her university education in California, from the University of the Pacific in Stockton. She gave her debut in Broadway in 1946, then she became a member of the Actors Studio.

Van Fleet was married to William Bales in the year of 1946 and lived with him. They had a son (only child) at her age of 33. His name was Michael Gardner Bales, born on October 17, 1949.

Mrs. Bales earned an Oscar as ‘Best Supporting Actress’ for her performance in ‘East of Eden’, where she played a role of a prostitute. For that performance, she got nominated for the BAFTA Award. Even in the field of drama, she was awarded Tony Awards for her performance in ‘Look Homeward, Angel’, for being the Best Supporting Actress.

She took challenging roles and kept giving her best.
