Jason Ritter had gone it alone since his father's tragic death, constantly building a reputation for himself as an actor equally competent at drama and his father's forte, Humor. Ritter began his onscreen career before his father died, with a recurring part on Joan of Arcadia (CBS, 2003-04), portraying a former athlete adapting to his new life as a paraplegic. However, because of his surname, Ritter faced harsher expectations, especially in acting school, where he felt he had had one strike against him before even starting. Fortunately for him, his parents were supportive when he told them about his ambitions to become an actor, even though they were adamant that Jason attended college and provided him with everything he needed to succeed. Ritter was well on his way to becoming a celebrity in his right by the time he appeared in his own high-profile drama series, "The Event" (NBC, 2010-11).
He also had a recurring role as Mark Cyr in the NBC television series Parenthood, for which he was nominated for an Emmy Award. In 2017, he appeared in Kevin (Probably) Saves the World, a TV comedy series. In Frozen II, he provided the voice of Ryder. Ritter co-starred as Baum's son opposite his father in The Dreamer of Oz: The L. Frank Baum Story. In 2002, Ritter was in the films PG and Swimfan. Ritter played Will Rollins in the slasher/horror flick Freddy vs. Jason in 2003. In Oliver Stone's film W, he played Jeb Bush. In 2007, he also played Mr. Fisk, a substitute teacher that Angelica falls in love with, in an episode of All Grown Up!, the grown-up version of Rugrats. In 2008, he released Good Dick, a film he co-wrote and directed with his long-term girlfriend at the time, Marianna Palka.
 Ritter has helped with the Young Storytellers Program as an actor. He  appeared in Gravity Falls, a Disney Channel comedy about twins Dipper and Mabel Pines who are forced to live with their "Grunkle" Stan and explain the strange happenings of Gravity Falls, Oregon, in 2012. In the program, he played Dipper.
 He also appeared as a supporting actor in Jennifer Fox's autobiographical feature film The Tale, written and directed by her. On January 20, 2018, the film premiered at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival, and it was eventually shown on HBO on May 26, 2018. Ritter was in a relationship with Marianna Palka from October 1999 till 2013 after they met at the Atlantic Theater Company in New York City, where they were both studying. Ritter married actress Melanie Lynskey in 2017 after four years of dating. In December 2018, the couple had their first child, a girl.
