Richard Coles is an English journalist and a musician. He is also a priest in the Church of England. He is known for his work alongside Jimmy Somerville in the band The Communards. One of his band’s song even became the best-selling song of the year 1986. After the split up of his band, Coles appeared on many television and radio shows. Coles was born on 26th March, 1962 in Northampton, England. He completed his high school education at Wellingborough School and after that, he went to the South Warwickshire College of Further Education and studied Drama and the Liberal Arts. He later attended the King’s College London in the year 1990.
In the year 2005, he was even awarded MA by research by the University of Leeds. Coles started his musical career by playing Saxophone and other musical instruments. He started learning Keyboards and Clarinet in the early in the 1980s. In 1980, he moved to London where he got an opportunity to play in theaters. He appeared I Gay and Lesbian Youth Film with Jimmy Somerville in the year 1983. The name of the movie was Framed Youth: The Revenge of the Teenage Perverts. The movie was a huge success and even won the Grierson Award. After that, Coles joined the Bronski Beat band. All the members of the band were gay along with Coles. Jimmy Somerville was also in the band and was the head singer of the band. Coles was the only Saxophonist of the band.
In the year 1984, Coles left the band and along with Somerville, formed his own band named the Communards. The band was a huge success, and they end up releasing three biggest hit songs of all time. Their song Don’t Leave Me This Way remained at the first position for four weeks. Three songs of their band were in the UK Top 10 Hit list. After a huge success, in the year 1988, Somerville and Coles split up, and they went solo. After having a successful career as a musician, Coles started his career as a priest in the 1990s.
He became a Roman Catholic while studying in the King’s College London. Coles got selected for the priesthood in the Church of London. He began his training in the year 2003 at the College of Resurrection, West Yorkshire. He got ordained in the year 2005. Coles was announced the priest of St. Mary the Virgin, Finedon in January 2011. Coles published his first book named Lives of the Improbable Saints on November 1, 2002. Coles appears on many broadcasting shows which he considers as showing off. In appears on Nightwaves on BBC Radio. He also appears on Newsnight Review on BBC Two.
He also appeared as a guest on a BBC television show Have I Got News For You. He also appeared as a guest in Heresy, Children in Need, Only Connect and much more. His most recent appearance was in a cooking series named Celebrity Masterchef. Coles is gay and resides with his partner in a celibate relationship.
