Gladys George, by birth known as Gladys Clare Evans, was born on September 13, 1904, in Patten, Maine, U.S. She was born to an Englishman named Sir Arthur Claire.
George made her first stage appearance when she was 3, along with her parents, in the United States. Throughout the decade, she was entrusted with several stage acts and on screen films. She had also been hired in Lawrence Riley’s comedy, which was titled, Personal Appearance. For her role in Valiant Is the World for Carrie, George had been nominated for the Academy Award for the Best Actress.
George was also a performer in theatres, and her on stage acts that were a great success are, The Distant City, Lady in Waiting, and The Betrothal.
In 1937, Gladys was designated as the lead in Madame X, and later, she also starred in Love is a Headache. Furthermore, she was hired for her appearances in The Roaring Twenties, a 1939 film, The Way Click to look into! >> Read More... of All Flesh, which was released in 1940, and in 1946, she featured in The Best Years of our Lives. Her film, He Ran All The Way, also got released in 1951. She had been entrusted as Iva Archer, the widow, in The Maltese Falcon, and as Madame Du Barry in Marie Antoinette.
In Flamingo Road, she portrayed herself as Lute-Mae Sanders, and in Detective Story as Miss Hatch, the nurse. She also played the role of Doris Day’s mother in Lullaby of Broadway. These were a few successful characters that she played before marking the end of her career as an actress on stage and on screen.
Personally, Gladys’ life was not a very successful one. Her marital status suffered a lot of changes and had abrupt ascent and decent in its history. She suffered separation four times. Her first husband was an actor named Ben Erway, who ran away with George and got married to her in Oakland, California, on 31st March, 1922. The couple got divorced in October 1930. Next, she wed a manufacturer, Edward Fowler, who left her in 1933, after spotting her in the arms of her co-star from Personal Appearance. Later, she got married to her Personal Appearance co-star, Leonard Penn, in New Haven, Connecticut, on September 19, 1935. However, her bonds with Leonard too did not last long, and they got separated. Lastly, Gladys got married to a bellboy who was a score younger to her, in 1946, and in 1950, the couple got separated.
Gladys had several health issues and was suffering from thoracic cancer, heart disease, and also with liver cirrhosis. In 1954, when she was in Los Angeles, she underwent a cerebral attack and passed away. She was only 50 years old. She has been buried in the Valhalla Memorial Park Cemetery, North Hollywood, California.
