Amanda Jane Smith, known to the television world as Amanda Abbington, was born on February 28, 1974, in London, England, UK. Her parents were John Smith and Patty Smith. She had an interest in appearing on the screen from her childhood and took steps for it.

Her first appearance is in different characters in the police procedure oriented TV series The Bill. The Bill is a successful TV drama which is known for its long time broadcasting police procedural series and won many awards on international platforms like BAFTA, etc. Amanda Abbington appeared in some episodes of the TV operas in minor roles. They include ‘Wycliffe’, ‘Casualty’, etc. She appeared in Richard Canter directed British comedy, Man Stroke Woman. Later she acted alongside Nicholas Lyndhurst in Fred Barton’s 2007-08 TV series After You've Gone. She played the role of a pregnant Siobha, and received a good response for her performance. When compared to the TV contemporary, My Family, this is a light comedy that couldn't attract many audiences towards it.

Later, she appeared in the role of Louise Munroe in Marc Jobst, and Dan Zeff directed Case Histories alongside Jann Isaacs. This TV series is the movie adaptation of a novel by Kate Atkinson. In 2011, she got a nomination for the Best Supporting Actress for Crime Thriller Award. In 2013, she appeared in the TV series ‘Mr. Selfridge’. This work is the biographical sketch of the life story of London's Department Storekeeper Selfridge. This TV Series got nominated for one Primetime Emmy Award in 2013.

She won the Crime Thriller Award for Best Supporting Actress and was nominated for the Critics Choice Television Award for Best Supporting Actress. Sherlock is an all time hit. This TV series has been the most viewed TV Series since 2001. When she met Martin Freeman on the sets of Men Only, they got involved and finally, they got married in 2000.
