John Cullum is a person with multiple talents. He was born in Knoxville, Tennessee, as a son of a banker. He completed his education at Knoxville High School and his graduation from the University of Tennessee. As a man of many talents, he did exceptionally well in sports field besides being an actor and a singer. He played for his University’s Southeastern Championship Tennis Team. He married Emily Frankel in 1959, and they have a son together named JD Cullum, who is also an actor by profession. His acting career started off as a debutant in Broadway where he portrayed the character of Sir Denadon in Camelot.

But, he found a significant role in Broadway only in the year 1965 where he replaced Louis Jourdan for On a Clear Day You Can See Forever. This portrayal made him open to a good amount of recognition and landed him with his first Tony Award nomination. He won Theatre World Award for his notable work in the same. The longest role he portrayed was of Edward Rutledge of South California in the Broadway Musical 1776. The Broadway performances yielded him much awards and appreciation.

He essayed the character of Charlie Anderson in the musical Shenandoah in 1974. The musical earned him most prestigious awards. He won Tony, Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle Award in 1975. The recent Broadway performances are added on to his limitless caliber. He went on to do William Shakespeare’s Cymbeline at Lincoln Centre in 2007. The notable thing about John Cullum is that his successful career life did not limit to theaters. He went on to be an intricate part of television as well. He was a part of CBS series Northern Exposure where he played the role of Holling Vincoeur.

This role made him a known and popular face in the television industry and among television audiences. He went on to do shows like NBC medical drama ER, Law &Order: Special Victim’s Unit, Mad Men, and NBC’s 30 Rock. He made the latest appearance in The Scottsboro Boys (2007) and earned recognition in Theatre Hall of Fame in the year 2007.
