He was born as Erwin Alois Robert Leder on 30 July 1951 in St. Pölten, Austria to Helen Cäcilie and Erwin Waldemar. Even though he was born in St. Pölten, he grew up in Ybbs near the river Danube. He was first married in 1977 to Maria Konturek. The couple has a daughter , Kinga, who was born in 1979. He married Nikla Renata Nitsch in 1982. Maria divorced him in 1989 and Nikla divorced him in 1997. He has two more children: Rita Leder and David Leder.
Around the age of 10 he started to paint and learnt how to play the piano. When he reached the age of 15 years, he started playing the drums and discovered his love for dancing. He started his career in medicine in 1971. In 1976 he had to abandon the idea of doing medicine because he got seriously ill and was unable to continue his studies. Once Erwin recovered from his disease, he enrolled in KRAUSS- School in Vienna, and it was here that he studied to become a director and an actor. Since then, there was no looking back for him, he went on to do 35 plays and 130 films and television productions. In 1995 he founded a Fusion Music Band in Vienna, Earthship but it dissolved in 1997.
He is best known for his role in 'Das Boot', where he plays the Chief mechanic Johann, which was a feature film directed by Wolfgang Petersen in 1981. The character was obsessed with the powerful engines of the boat and his nickname was Das Gespenst ( The Ghost The Ghost is a Pakistani drama series in Urdu. It >> Read More... ). The character had a nervous breakdown and he had to be restrained when the sub is forced to dive deep to escape their pursuers . In this pursuit, bolts shoot off in the pressure hull. He redeemed himself by stopping the water leaks when the boat is trapped in Gibraltar.
In 2003, he got back to theatre acting with the Bedhound and also acted in the horror/action movie 'Underworld', as the Lycan scientist Singe. And also in its sequel in the year 2006. In 1990, he became a member of "ERSTES WIENER LESE- & STEGREIFTHEATER" company. Since then he has appeared in many theatre-readings in Vienna, Berlin, and Kassel. In 1989 he won a Myst Fest Award under the Best Actor category, for his work in Eis.
