Anita Powell is Voice of America’s (VOA) southern Africa correspondent (based in Johannesburg), Southern Africa, and covering about 15 African countries. She covers news in almost every aspect, from Angola's oil riches to Zimbabwe's typical political situation. Anita Powell is also a writer and has traveled around the world (to Iraq, Ethiopia, Afghanistan, Congo, and Texas) in search of a good story.
Before joining VOA, Anita Powell worked as a journalist for the news agency, as well as a news reporter for The New York Times, the Associated Press, The Root, and Al Jazeera, covering topics and events on the Southern African continent (including the death of Nelson Mandela). Anita Powell also writes about women’s issues and fashion, which have been published by Marie Claire and Elle magazines.
She has also covered the conflicts in Afghanistan, Iraq, and several other places all over the world. She has reported from Ethiopia, Ukraine, Congo, Pakistan, South Africa, Zimbabwe, and other countries. She graduates from the University of Texas (Honors Program). Â Anita Powell also files radio, web, and few TV stories. She now lives in London walking, covering the Games. Her favorite sport is boxing.
