Howard Goodall is one of the most renowned English music composers of choral music, stage musicals, film, and TV scores, born in Bromley, Kent, on 26th May 1958. He is also a music historian, an award-winning broadcaster, and a distinguished spokesperson for music education in the UK. He did his schooling at New College School, Stowe School, and Lord Williams’s School. He did his further studies from Christ Church, Oxford, with music as his forte’.
“The Hired Man” was Goodall’s First professional musical. He completed it when he was just 26. It is a mesmerizing work inspired by the stage works of Kurt Weill, English choral, and folk music. Many national ceremonies and memorials use his choral music as a backdrop. His setting of Psalm 23 and Love divine are among the most performed of all sacred music.
Goodall is the recipient of many prestigious awards, including the Specialist classical Gramophone Award for “Enchanted Voice,” Classical BRIT award, EMMY award, BAFTA, etc. His best-known themes and scores include “Into the Strom,” “Red Dwarf,” “Mr. Bean,” “The Gathering Storm,” “The Borrowers,” “The Vicar of Dibley,” and many more. Goodall was the first person to become England’s National Ambassador for Singing.
He is married to Val Fancourt, a classical music agent, and the couple is blessed with two daughters.
