Ananda Devi

Ananda Devi is a renowned writer from Mauritius, born on 23rd March 1957. She is of Indian descent, and her roots are in Andhra Pradesh. Ananda has been a well-talented writer since childhood. She took part in a short story competition and won the prize announced by Radio France International. She was only 15 at the time of winning the competition. She went to London to do her Ph.D. in Social Anthropology at the School of Oriental and African Studies. She started publishing her Short Story collection in 1977. Her first collection was Solstices. Later, she had been in Brazzaville, Congo, for a decade. In 1989, Ananda shifted to Ferney – Voltaire. She published her first novel, Rue La Poudriure, in 1989, and in 1993, Le Voile De Draupadi was published.

In 1997, she released L'Arbre Fouet and in 2000, she wrote Moi, l'interdite. She received Prix Radio France du Livre de l'Océan Indien for Moi, l'interdite. In 2006, she again won an award for her novel, Eve de ses décombres. Impressed by this novel, the Mauritian filmmakers, Harrikrisna Anenden and Sharvan Anenden adapted it to a Mauritian cinema. Ananda Devi was honored with Certificat d'Honneur Maurice Cagnon Du Conseil International D'études Francophones in 2007 for her literary works.

In 2010, she was honored with the Prestigious Award in France, Chevalier Des Arts Et Des Lettres. Many of her novels are translated into English. Her impressive writings include Indian Tango, Le Sari Vert, a poetry collection, Quand La Nuit Consent À Me Parler, an autobiographical novel, Les Hommes Qui Me Parlent. In 2018, she wrote, Manger L'autre, novel (2018). In 2020, she penned a poetry collection, Danser Sur Tes Braises Suivi De Six Décennies, and a short story collection, Fardo. In 2021, she wrote a novel, Le Rire Des Déesses. Ananda Devi is married to the Mauritian director, Harrikrisna Anenden.
