Shishir Kumar Bhaduri was an actor, also known as the pioneer of modern Bengali Theatre. He was born on 2nd October 1889 in Howrah, West Bengal. During his career in Bengali theatre, he was a man juggling several roles with grace. Bhaduri did acting, direction, playwright, and scenic design. In 1905 he wrote the Entrance Examination from Bangabashi School and completed his education at the Scottish College at Kolkata in 1910. Bhaduri also had a MA in English Literature. During his college days in Kolkata, he participated in theatre plays. Later, Bhaduri also started teaching at the Vidyasagar College as a professor. He quit his job as a professor in 1921 to pursue full-time acting in theatre. Subsequently, Shishir Bhaduri joined the Madan Theatre in Kolkata, but later due to disagreements, Bhaduri joined Motion Pictures.
In 1912, He became immensely popular after acting in Rabindranath Tagore’s Baikunther Khata. He worked and directed Sharat Chandra Chattopadhyay’s Andher Alo and Chandranath. Shishir Kumar formed his cast for stage plays in 1923. His influential roles are, Raghupati and Jaysingh in Bisarjan in 1926, Yogesh in Prafulla in 1927, Nimchand in Sadhabar Ekadashi in 1928, etc. In 1930, Shishir Kumar and his cast toured the United States and acted Sita at New York’s Vanderbilt Theatre. He set up Srirangam in 1942. Srirangam in current times is known as Bishwarupa Theatre.
