Naresh Chandra Mitra is an eminent actor and director who primarily works in Bengali films. He was born in Agartala, Tripura, on 18th May 1888 and went to the University of Calcutta to study law. He started his acting career in 1922 by joining the Minerva theatre. Later, he joined the Star Theatre in Kolkata in 1923, where he frequently played the role of an antagonist. He has acted in several films produced by the Taj Mahal Company, East India Film, and Kali Films. Besides acting, Mitra also took up direction in 1928; he directed Devadas, produced by the Eastern Indian Film Syndicate. The movie was the first-ever visual representation of the novel Devadas by Sharatchandra Chattopadhyay.
