Monu Mukhopadhyay was also known as Sourendra Mohan Mukherjee or Monu Mukherjee. He was an Indian actor who had worked mainly in the Bengali language films and television industry. On March 1, 1930, he was born in Calcutta in Bengal Presidency, India. His father’s name is Amarendranath Mukherjee, who was involved in acting at Calcutta Theatre. Monu was married and had two daughters, namely Ratna Sardar and Rina Mukherjee.
He was fascinated by acting when he played the role of a wife at a neighborhood club play. In 1957, he worked as a prompter at the Srirangam Theatre (also known as Biswarupa Movie Theatre since 2001). Also, he worked in other well-known theatres from the late sixties onwards, such as Sujata Sadan, Sarkarina, Bishwanath Mancha, Rangmahal, Minerva, and Star theatre. He learned to play Tabla from Krishnakumar Ganguly, also known as Natubabu, a famous Tabla player.
Monu Mukhopadhyay replaced the famous film actor Kali Banerjee in the play “Khuda,” his first notable part in acting. After Monu Mukhopadhyay’s death, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee conferred him the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Tele-Samman Awards in 2015 and honored him.
