Dhiraj Bhattacharya was also known as Dhiraj Lal. He was an Indian actor who had worked in the Bengali and Hindi film industry. He was also a writer, director, and theatre personality. On November 5, 1905, he was born in Jessore district (now in Bangladesh) in Bengal Presidency, British India. His father’s name is Lalit Mohan Bhattacharya. He went to Mitra Institution, Kolkata, and passed his matriculation in 1923. After that, he started studying literature at Ashutosh College in Kolkata. However, he could not complete his studies. Dhiraj Bhattacharya initially worked as a policeman before entering the film industry. He began his acting career in silents films after joining Madan Theatre Company. Dhiraj Bhattacharya had worked in the film industry from the 1920s to the 1950s. He got his first break in the film industry in 1925. He marked his acting debut career in the silent film “Sati Lakshmi,” directed by Jyotish Bannerjee starring Kunjalal Chakraborty and Patience Cooper.

Dhiraj Bhattacharya got his big breakthrough from Charu Roy’s landmark realist drama “Bangalee” in 1936, which earned him first recognition. Meanwhile, he had begun acting on stage and working in plays such as Sindhu Gaurab (1932) and Charitraheen (1935). Dhiraj Bhattacharya had a stellar career as an actor and director in the film industry.
Along with acting, he had also directed the Bengali film “Joyar Bhanta” in 1936. He was a versatile actor and got famous for his romantic performances and innovative skills in playing villainous roles. Dhiraj Bhattacharya’s autobiography in two parts was published in 1956. Also, he had written a few storybooks, such as Jakhan Police Chilam, Jakhan Nayak Chilam, Mahua Milan, Sajano Bagan, and Mon Nie Khela. The veteran actor died in 1959 in Calcutta, West Bengal, India.
