His elder brother Ilayaraaja is also one of the most noted personalities in the music industry. Like his brother even he was interested in music and the both used to take training together. He was very inspired by his brother and considers him as a big inspiration and idol for him. He made his entry in the industry with Kozhi Koovuthu in 1982. He started as a director. In all his movies which he has directed, he has assigned his brother Ilayaraaja as the music director. The two have worked efficiently and were very much liked by the audience. His directorial movies include movies like Kokkarokko, Devi Sridevi, Enga Ooru Pattukaran, Shenbagamae Shenbagamae, Karagattakaran, Ooru Vittu Ooru Vanthu and many more.
