Vijay Awards is a prestigious ceremony organized by the channel Vijay TV to commemorate the best works of the Tamil Film Industry. The 5th Vijay Awards ceremony was held on 25th June 2011 in Chennai. A total of 32 categories were awarded from a record number of 142 movies of the year 2010. People who work behind the camera and the who create mind blowing music were also nominated in the categories. The winners were decided by the Jury member which consisted of Actress Radhika, well-known Director A.R. Murugadoss, Cinematographer Ravi K. Chandran and famous Producer, Director and Writer Yugi Sethu.

The function began by the organizers honoring the nine receivers and winners of the elusive National Award from the State. Further, the audience were also treated to spectacular performances by Tamil Superstars Amala Paul, Shriya Charan, and Bharath. A dance group from Mumbai named Mumbai Experts also enthralled the audience by dancing to the tunes of the remix version of Sheila Ki Jawaani, Boom Boom Robot, Irumbile Oru Idhayam, Nagal and several such Tamil songs. There was also mind-numbing musical performances. The audience gave standing ovation whenever a veteran of the Industry was honored. Best Film of the Year Award was bagged by the movie Angadi Theru. The director of the movie and the female lead of the movie, Vasanth Balan, and Anjali respectively won the Best Director and the Best Actor Award in the female category respectively.

Vikram won the award for Best Actor-Male for his splendid performance in the movie Raavan. Popular actor Rajnikanth won the Best Villian Award for his role in the movie Raavan. However, since he was unwell and was not able to attend the awards function, his son-in-law Dhanush received the award on his behalf. He also read out a thank-you letter of his father-in-law on the stage. Besides Jury Awards there were also Viewers Awards and the winners of this awards were decided by the loyal fans and viewers of the channel through votes.

In all, there were four categories in this Awards from which the Favourite Hero and Heroine Awards was bagged by Rajnikanth and Trisha for her role in the movie Vinnaithaandi Varuvaaya respectively. Veteran Director K. Balachander was honored with the Chevalier Sivaji Ganesan Award. He gave a very humble and heartfelt speech upon receiving the award. The media partner of the awards show was Hindu Cinema Plus. The show was telecasted on the Vijay TV channel and received a lot of love and was a huge success.
