Kerala State Film Awards 1991 is the continuation of the legendary awards ceremony in Kerala, which began in the year 1969. The best actor award was given to Thilakan for his role in the movie Perumthachan. The best director award was given to Govindan Aravindan for his direction of the film Vasthuhara. The best film of that year was Vasthuhara. From the best writer award to the winner of the best film, all the prizes were bagged by the film Vasthuhara.
Kavitha Ranjini was the best actress. These awards are provided annually from an independent jury, which leaves no chance for any type of cheating. These awards are announced by the Cultural Affairs and presented by the chief minister of Kerala. Along with the awards, a certificate and cash prize are also given. The cash prize is rupees one lakh. There are different categories of awards that are given to the participants. The total number of awards presented to date is fifty-four. These have been given to 34 different actors.
