The story dates back to 323 BCE, directly following Alexander's general Seleucus Nicator remains in India, having slaved Ambhiraj. At the same time the King of Takshashila has taken the Paurava Kingdom after assassinating Porus. Chanakya, a Takshashilan Brahmin scholar and former Prime Minister of the Paurava Kingdom, arrives in Magadha, controlled by the unjust and cruel Nanda Emperor Dhana Nanda. He advises him to push the Macedonians out of India and join the Mahajanapadas (Indian kingdoms). However, Dhana Nanda publicly humiliates Chanakya in court, mocking his ambition of a united India, and reveals to him that it was he who financially assisted Seleucus during Puru's killing so that Seleucus would not attack Magadha. This drives Chanakya to vow to end the Nanda dynasty and establish a capable ruler on the throne of Magadha.

Chanakya meets Chandragupta (Chandra), an enslaved person who is the crown prince of Piplivan, a country destroyed by Dhana Nanda, and recognizes in him the potential to become the next king. Meanwhile, Dhana Nanda (unaware of Chandra's ancestry) acknowledges his abilities and hires him as the bodyguard for his cherished younger sister, Durdhara. Slowly, Durdhara takes a liking for Chandragupta. Chandra raises a small army with the assistance of Piplivan's former troops and the king of the janapada (Indian kingdom), Assaka, Vajrabahu. Chandragupta engages Dhana Nanda in a series of battles, killing his elder brother Govishanka and commander-in-chief, Bhadrasaal. However, due to Vajrabahu's treason (he later loses his life and kingdom to Dhana Nanda), he is ultimately defeated and forced to escape Magadha.

Before being defeated, Chandra could inform Durdhara that her father, Mahapadma Nanda, had been assassinated by Dhana Nanda after the former pushed the latter to distribute a portion of his dominion to each of his seven brothers. This completely estranged her from Dhana Nanda. Chandra, and Chanakya arrive in Takshashila to seek the help of Seleucus.
