‘Ramayan’ was an Indian epic theme based on Valmiki’s Ramayana. It was also an adaptation of Tulsidas' Ramcharitmanas. But when the serial was telecast it had done research on every Indian languages text of Ramayan and made this serial a super hit in the history of Indian television.
The serial had run for two years (1986-1988) and was directed by veteran Hindi filmmaker Ramanand Sagar. The series made Arun Govil and Deepika (who played the role of Ram and Sita respectively) the most over-rated TV stars of that time.
People used to worship them as ideal Ram and Sita. Later even political party like BJP had sought the support of these two actors in election time due to their popularity. The title music was by music composer Jaidev. Lyrics and background music was by Ravindra Jain. The executive producer of the serial was Subhash Sagar.
The second unit directors were Anand Sagar and Moti Sagar. The serial was brought to Indian television by Sagar Art Enterprises and produced and directed by Ramanand Sagar. When the series was televised, the street would get vacant, and people would sit in front of the idiot box to have a glimpse of the characters portrayed in serial.
Dara Singh played the role of Hanuman. Lakshman, Bharat, Shatrughna’s role was assigned to actors Sunil Lahiri, Sanjay Jog and Sameer Rajda, who were all newcomers in television. Hindi film heroines Jayashree Gadkar was seen as Kaushalya, Padma Khanna played the role of Kaikeyi and Lalita Pawar was seen as Manthara. Rajni Bala essayed the character of Sumitra.
Vijay Arora played the role of Indrajit. Bal Dhuri was noticed as Dashratha (father of Rama) and Mulraj Rajda as Janak (father of Sita). Arvind Trivedi played the role of Ravana. The special effects were performed by Ravikant Nagaich, who works for Hindi movies. Maganlal Dresswala & Co took in charge of costumes for this epic drama that was telecast on Doordarshan.
