Plot

A Tamizh film on superbike racing is certainly a refreshing and unique idea, where a young man is haunted by his past and trapped by guilt and blames himself for the death of his father in a motorcycle accident, which has made him haunted of riding a bike again. Despite several attempts shown by his mother to help him recover from the past, he refuses to come out of his shell. But after the entry of the love side (Samyuktha), a bike Wikipedia, the storyline changes where again the lead tries to overcome his fear to help his love out from the hands of the kidnappers.

Star performances

After creating a unique place for himself with Paradesi, Atharvaa is back with a good physique and handsome looks. The role played by him as Prithvi, surrounded by blame and guilt, has been successfully played by him. Devadarshini being cast as Atharvaa's mother is an excellent choice as she steals the show as a responsible yet ultra-cool- new generation mom. Priya Anand has been shown as a likeable lead with some really lovely costumes and is at her cute best as the quintessential romantic interest. However, what is a bit disconnected is the role of the antagonist (played by Johny Tri Nguyen), which is a bit underwritten. The rest of the cast has done what is required of them.

Analysis

Irumbu Kuthirai has been shown as a bike-raving film, but what really works is the romance. The lead pair looks good together. Jony Tri Nguyen's casting fits the role of an antagonist, but somehow, his character becomes unintentionally funny (especially with the Tamizh dialogues!). Though there is a huge star cast, only a few cast papers are on the screen for some extended time. Gurudev's choice of a unique tone for the camera pulls off well, starting from a picturesque presentation on Pondy to the racy bike scenes it has paved off well.

Most importantly, the whole movie let down the expectations of the audience. First, we get seemingly never-ending fisticuffs, and then this moves on to a bike race, which, despite the daring shots and furious cuts, isn't as exciting as it should be. Among G.V. Prakash's songs, Penne Penne and Ange Ippo Enne Seigiraai, they make an impression despite the poor placement.

What's There?

  • Pondy depicts a beautiful background for the movie.
  • Prakash's songs, Penne Penne and Ange Ippo Enne Seigiraai, make a nice impression.
  • Gopi Amarnath's action sequences deserve a special mention for some clinical touches.

What's not there?

  • A proper sequencing of the movie is missing.
  • A proper role to the antagonist has not been given; even after being an evil character, he unintentionally becomes a funny character.
  • Even after being a movie about bike racing, proper heed hasn’t been given to the racing feature of the film.

Verdict

To sum up, this is a movie that could have paved its way to box office success; it just muzzles through to the finish line. The film travels at a sluggish pace for the most part and moves into the next year only during the final sequence. It crosses the finish line lethargically.
