Plot
The movie is based on the author Ismat chugtai’s loved and celebrated masterpiece “Lihaaf”, which was published in 1942, the movie has the same name and revolves around a young girl, living with begum who was the young girl’s adoptive aunt and was married to an old nawab. The little girl witnessed every day how the Begum was treated and saw the relationship between her and the masseuse unfold, she was too young to understand it then, about the loveless marriage of the Begum and her tribulations in that caged marriage but Ismat’s book challenges the minds of our society and they find it disturbing to even think that homosexual relationships exist and thus Ismat faces court charges on being guilty of writing and showing obscenity in her books.
Caged in a loveless marriage with a nawab who turns out to be gay, the Begum finds solace and love as she also explores the same-sex relationship with her masseuse Rabbu.
Star Performance
All the actors have done a good job portraying their characters, although the acting lacks the fierceness and beauty that is mentioned in the original book that has been so popular. Ismat chugtai’s writing could not have been justifiably shown on the screen but still, a decent job has been done to bring light to this novel.
Analysis
Ismat chugtai was a controversial artist, controversial because her writings challenged the judgmental minds of the society who could not believe in anything but the traditional workings of nature and humans. Lihaaf talks about homosexual relationships and publishing a book that talks about this, in the 1940s must have been an ordeal, because homosexuality and freedom of speech seem like a far-fetched topics even in today's world. The original book is mesmerising and has a lovely yet fierce writing style, which is what everybody was hoping for in the screenplay but the actors at times lacked the depth, that their characters needed. Lihaaf is a must-watch movie and the viewers should try reading the original book first before coming to any conclusions.

Verdict
The movie was worth it, especially because it was based on such a beautiful novel, if only the actors had done a better job, this movie would have received all the hype. Yet, the movie is a must-watch.
