Plot
Ganga was cheated by her lover Ramnik, who makes her believe that he would make her a heroine in Bollywood. But, he makes her end up in Kamathipura, where she becomes a sex worker. In a few years, she considers the place her home, and the girls involved in the work as her become her relatives. How her life transforms is dealt with the rest of the story.
Star Performance
Alia Bhatt nailed the character well. Her dialogue delivery and body language are fantastic. She has taken a weighty role and did it with perfection. Ajay Devgan has got a performance-oriented role though he appears for a lesser time. He did his character extraordinarily well. Shantanu Maheshwari, Jim Sarbh, Seema Pahwa, and Vijay Raaz excelled in the given roles.
Analysis
The story didn’t have many twists or turns. The director takes time to set up the story in the bygone era. The visuals are extraordinary, and the music too. SLB is definitely a multi-talented person who excels in multiple fields. His editing and direction are fantastic. Songs are okayish. His narration is excellent, but the way he handled the life of Gangu should have been a bit better. He didn’t go much deeper into her life, and if that had been done, it would have been better. Alia’s dialogues are finely penned, and the girl mouthed it well. The cinematography is excellent. The color tones used suit the mood of the scene perfectly.

Verdict
Gangubai Kathiawadi brings a fresh tale with neat performances. If the story has some more depth in the protagonist's life, it might have been better. However, the film is watchable once for the excellence in acting, directing, and visualization.
