Viceroy's House is the Indo- British historical movie scripted by Paul Mayeda Berges, Moira Buffini and Gurinder Chadha. Gurinder Chadha directed the film. Hugh Bonneville, Gillian Anderson, Manish Dayal, Huma Qureshi, and Michael Gambon are in the main star cast of Viceroy's House. “ A R Rahman” composed the music and the cinematography is by Ben Smithard. Om Puri, Simon Williams, Sarah-Jane Dias, Samrat Chakrabarti, Roberta Taylor, Tanveer Ghani, Denzil Smith, Lucy Fleming, Neeraj Kabi and Darshan Jariwala are also in the supporting cast. The film is produced by Paul Mayeda Berges, Gurinder Chadha and Deepak Nayar. The film was screened at the 67th Berlin International Film Festival. The film has been dubbed and released in Hindi as Partition: 1947.

The story is about the life inside the Viceroy’s House during the Indian independence. The plot deals with how the last British viceroy of India Lord Louis Mountbatten dealt with the partition of India during the independence. The plot also deals with the love story of a Hindu man and a Muslim woman, who served in the Viceroy’s House. Their love story gets another character, the woman’s fiancé.

Star Performance

Om Puri’s performance as a blind father of Huma Qureshi impresses the audiences. The rest of the cast has done as directed but could not be said that they are perfect.

Gurinder Chadha has tried to bring out a different angle of the partition. The film seems to be an ambitious project of Gurinder and it is a well scripted and well-executed project. Jinnah wants a separate Muslim country whereas Gandhi and Nehru want undivided India. Along with the political conflicts, a mild love story is laced. Although we have seen a lot of such partition based stories, Gurinder Chadha’s script is a bit different. The script reveals the incidents from the eyes of an Indian mother. A good try by Gurinder Chadha!

What’s Not There?

  • Chadha’s execution is good
  • A different historical feel

What’s Not There?

  • Chadha didn’t reveal the rumored relationship between Nehru and Lady Edwina Mountbatten, which was highly expected
  • Disappointing background score by Rahman
  • Mahatma Gandhi, Nehru and Jinnah's roles didn’t gel with the story of the Viceroy house staffs

Viceroy’s House doesn’t deal much with the Indian independence struggle but with the incidents that happened inside the Viceroy’s house. If you are a person, who love to watch historical films, then this film might satisfy you.
