Plot
Jerry Hickfang, the quintessential nice guy next door who works in a fixtures and faucets company also suffers from violent tendencies, bordering on the homicidal – stemming from his problematic childhood – and needs to take anti-psychotic medicines to control himself. However, Jerry doesn’t take his medicines as prescribed by his tender psychiatrist; leading to Jerry talking to his pets: his cat, “Mr. Whiskers” and his dog, “Bosco”. All this while, Jerry gets into a romantic tryst with his gorgeous, colleague – “Fiona”- and amidst this torrential romance ends up accidentally killing her. As he dismembers her body to get rid of the evidence, he hangs onto her head and keeps it in the freezer. Jerry eventually falls in love with another colleague – Lisa- attempting to live a normal life. Eventually, impelled by his conscience, Jerry confesses all his crimes to his therapist, Doctor Warren – whom he proceeds to kidnap. Eventually, he returns to his apartment with a bound Doctor Warren, and climbs down a vent into a bowling alley, breaking a gas pipe in the process. This causes a gas leak and an explosion, leading to Jerry’s death via excessive smoke inhalation. This leads to Jerry being transported to a white void, where Mr. Whiskers and Bosco confess their love for each other and he is forgiven by Lisa and Fiona. The end is accentuated by a musical with Jerry apologizing and being forgiven by all his victims – and then proceeding to do a musical with them.
Star Performance
Ryan Reynolds aces the role of the troubled protagonist. His nuanced portrayal of Jerry Hickfang makes for a solid performance – conveying both Jerry’s redeeming qualities and his uncontrollable and maniacal propensities and urges. Gemma Arterton’s versatility was on full display, with her being adept at portraying both an innocent, young girl in love and a disembodied figment of Jerry’s demented thoughts. Anna Kendrick also gave a brilliant performance, bestowing Jerry with kindness for the first time in his life – leading us to the very instrumental redemption arc.
Analysis
Satrapi, with a solid track record of portraying genuine feelings within the envelope of complex and bizarre situations, does so once again with “The Voices”. The film is chock-full of exhilarating and fast-paced, action-packed sequences, with no compromises on gore. “The Voices” narrates beautifully the story of a truly damaged man, unable to deal with the imposing emotional baggage and childhood trauma, which renders him incapable of retrospection and reflecting upon his temperament. The supporting cast has also done a phenomenal job at helping the audience explore the various facets of Jerry’s complex persona, Gemma Arterton’s part as the disembodied speaking head, along with pets helps expose the depth of Jerry’s demented thoughts. Anna Kendrick’s performance as Jerry’s kind and cajoling romantic partner - showcases his gentler side. The climax with Jerry ending up in heaven and many other scenes are absurd and hilarious leaving the one craving for more, however, certain scenes suffer from excesses in terms of gore and slapstick comedy not letting Jerry be portrayed in as serious a light as he perhaps should’ve been. The background theme is versatile and adaptive. The execution of the climax is fantastic – and the plot twist within, leaving one captivated. Johannes Breuer’s handled the visuals fabulously and Stephane Roche’s edits keep the pacing agile and smooth.

Verdict
The Voices, above all is the rare, nuanced portrayal of a truly deranged individual. The cast portrays their roles brilliantly and the Satrapi’s writing prowess shines through the bizarre, yet somehow enlightening situations Jerry finds himself in. Although the action can seem excessive at times, the movie remains a must-watch, despite such minor flaws.
