Chess is an interesting game (and many people’s childhood favorite), and it is indeed tempting to watch it on screen. Well, transforming the real life story of a sports person on screen is undoubtedly a challenge to the director. Don’t mind if you don’t know the yesteryear sports star Bobby Fischer. Watch ‘ Pawn Sacrifice Click to look into! >> Read More... ’ to get a peek into his life, along with his sports moves.
‘Director Edwark Zwick’ should be lauded for coming up with such a beautiful piece. This movie revolves around the life of chess player Bobby Fischer, played excellently (to a commendable degree) by Tobey Maguire Tobey Maguire is an American film producer and act >> Read More... . Edwark accurately brings the life of the self-absorbed Bobby Fischer into screen. Edwark had earlier worked on outstanding films like The Last Samurai, Glory and Love and Other Drugs, and this film is also nothing short of excellence.
Plot: Fischer is the son of a Russian Jewish parent, who is being scouted upon for the Communist inclination. The film shows that Fischer imbibes paranoia due to this. Fischer is a child prodigy and he is confident that he will surely be a chess champion. But a hurdle in his way is a Russian, Spassky, a ruling chess star. Spassky is the pet of Russia and they give him a royal treatment. And Spassky leads a frivolous life. At one juncture, pain and agony are the only companions of Fischer. With chess being almost a Russian thing then what does poor Fischer do? Is Fischer normal enough, to leave aside his eccentricities, and win the match? Is he supported by his mother? Does he win the match in 1972, at the frenzy of a Cold War? Watch the film to find out.
Pawn Sacrifice has all the elegant elements needed for a biopic. It is a known story that chess master Bobby Fischer is an eccentric in his own way and he also has the anti-Russian fume added to this. Pawn Sacrifice delves on two masters amidst a hideous cold war. This film indeed brings back the mood of that time. Fischer is more than 6 foot in real life but Tobey Maguire is not so. But that is not a major concern, given his good performance. But sometimes it looks as though he exaggerates the yelling and other eccentric stuff. Liev Schreiber Liev Schreiber is a famous producer and actor in H >> Read More... enacts the role of a crafty and humane chess player and he makes a special mark for himself in some scenes. (Manager of Fischer) are also good in their acting. Lily Rabe (Fischer’s mother) gives a heart-rending performance.
The film mainly delves on the psychological turmoil of Bobby Fischer. On the flip side, the movie doesn’t delve deeply into the real chess playing. Forgiven though, it’s a biopic.
Fischer’s life is indeed a pitiable one and you will come out of the film, quite disturbed, if you are not too keen on the minor flaws of the film.
Verdict: The best chess is to be played in the otherwise imperfect world. This, in itself, will induce to watch the film.
