Plot
Woman Walks Ahead is about the endeavors of a portrait painter named Catherine Weldon. As a young girl, Catherine Weldon studied painting and was passionate about it, but she had to give up all of her artistic passions when she got married as she had to start working instead. However, one day her husband passes away and she becomes a widowed woman. The death of her husband reignites her passion for painting and fortunately, even the wealth she has is enough to assist her in her travels. to the Dakotas to complete her dream of painting a portrait of Sitting Bull. Sitting Bull is the leader of the Hunkpapa Lakota. However, once she is in the region, she gets caught up with the Lakota people’s struggle over their rights to land.
Star Performance
Jessica Chastain has given a brilliant performance.
Michael Greyeyes’ performance is not overdone and is natural, convincing and soulful.
Analysis
The script for the film is very predictable. Despite that, all the cast members have acted tremendously well, giving more emotion and life to the script. The cinematography and the scenes where the snowcapped hills and various other beautiful landscapes have been shown, are breathtaking. Although the movie has been based on real-life events, it does not do justice to her real story as it deviates from it. In real-life she was already an activist by the time she travelled out to the Dakotas, and she had also been a part of the National Indian Defense Association and even taught herself Lakota. However, in the movie, although they paint her out to be well-intentioned, she is also made to look pretty ignorant and naive. Although the line between fact and fiction has been blurred in this film, the amount of talent involved is so much that it overweighs the film’s lack of accuracy in staying true to the real story.

“Woman Walks Ahead” is a beautiful film and anybody can watch it, although some might find it a little bit bothersome when they see that the plot deviates from the true story that the film is apparently based on.
