Plot
The film is an animation set in Japan twenty years in the future. In that future, in response to outbreaks of snout fever and canine flu, Mayor Kobayashi (voiced by Kunichi Nomura), who hates dogs, banishes the dogs of Megasaki City, to a trash-filled island, and even sends his own household’s dog, Spots (voiced by Liev Schreiber Liev Schreiber is a famous producer and actor in H >> Read More... ) to trash island. Mayor Kobayashi’s ward Atari (voiced by Koyu Rankin) was deeply saddened by the loss of his dog, Spots, who was more like a best friend to him, and goes to the trash island to bring back Spots. The film follows Atari’s adventures in his journey of searching for Spots.
Star Performance
All the voice actors’ performed commendably. The Japanese voice actors performance makes it feel like the film is indeed set in the backdrop of Japan.
Analysis
The film beautifully portrays the story of the innocent dogs and of Atari, a boy who lost his parents and only finds solace in the company of his dog, Spots. The film showcases Japan the best an American director could have portrayed. It perfectly exhibits the lovely bond between people and their pets.

This animation, directed by Wes Anderson, is a film that warms the soul by portraying the special bond between people and their pets. Even though it is a comedy, the film also deals with darker topics such as politics and mass-media manipulation. The plot of the movie keeps the viewers engaged and well-timed comedic reliefs keeps the viewers entertained. So, the Wes Anderson animation is a perfect example of a comedy with a meaningful plotline.
