Lady Bird is one of the most inspiring stories about love, life, relationships, and growing up that you’ll ever see.
Plot
The story revolves around the 17-year-old steadfast, opinionated, and adventurous Christine “Lady Bird” McPherson as she finishes her last year in school, and will move on to college. The turbulent relationship with her mother, her experiments with love and friendship, her desire to move to a place with culture, her apparent love for her city, and her need to have some adventure in life is what the story is all about. The story takes place in Sacramento, California in the year 2002- 2003.
Analysis
Just like a ladybird, which is neither an insect nor a bird, Lady Bird hangs on the cusp of a coming of age tale, and a didactic story about growing up. The tale is intrinsically a universal one which very gracefully shows the need of a young girl to experience life, culture and to step out of the restrictions imposed on her, to do things that surpass the ordinariness of the everyday life. The young generation can relate to a movie like this. Writer-Director Greta Gerwig’s strength lies in the fact that she drew on her experiences for inspiration, and showed us the world from a girl’s perspective who has a thirst for freedom, to be recognized, to not miss out on the big, and seemingly fun things in life. The movie also explores Lady Bird’s relationship with her mother. Familiarity breeds contempt and that we are particularly hard on our family members, and the film explores that in abundance. When her mother, Marion, sees Christine, she sees herself in her and is particularly stern and hard on her. They are both high spirited and stubborn, and their father is the one who almost always gets stuck between them as a pacifier. While exploring the life of the young girl, the film oozes hilarity as well. It is in the subtle details that Gerwig wins out. The film is about finding out who you are, where you belong, and what your role is in this life. The background score and the songs emphatically bring out some of the vivid moments in the film. Gerwig’s storytelling and the excellent cinematography makes it a worthy Oscar nominee for the big three: Best Film, Best Director, and Best Actress.
Star Performance
The script is immaculately written with emotion dripping out, and hence very well acted out. Gerwig is very much the star of the movie. Saoirse Ronan Saoirse Ronan is an Irish- American actress. She w >> Read More... , who plays Christine, proves with her performance that she is one of the most formidable actors at present. She brings out the Lady Bird in her so exactly that you look at the putative stereotypes in the film with such a refreshing perspective. Laurie Metcalfe as the mother shines no less, sometimes even more than Ronan. She makes us sympathize with herself and tugs at our hearts.
What’s there?
1. Gerwig’s brilliant storytelling.
2. The idealistic and very relatable teenager who has her own story to tell.
3. Perfect portrayal of the struggles faced by the young generation.
What’s not there?
1. There is nothing in this movie that will make you question watching it.
Verdict
Life is always messy and never perfect, but Lady Bird in its charm, chaos, and realism is almost too perfect.
Lady Bird is one such movie that everyone should watch at least once.
