When asked about Arunoday’s role, the director said, "He will play Lieutenant Colonel Rana Sharif, who is inspired by a real-life soldier of the Pakistani Frontier Force of that era. It's not a negative role at all. Soldiers of both sides are fighting for their countries. In that sense, both Mohanlal’s and Arunoday's characters have the same set of values and equal importance on screen." Ravi also said, “We had been in discussions with several actors before zeroing in on Arunoday. We needed someone who could act well and also look the part." Besides Mohanlal and Arunoday, the film also has Rana Daggubati of “Baahubali” fame.
