This era has been a golden one for female roles in B-Town. Women are no longer damsels in distress, waiting to be saved by a muscled hero, titillating men or being just an eye candy. They’re now taking roles which are bigger and bolder, where they make decisions, strategize, and kick ass. Here are the top 10 badass female roles in Bollywood.
The gun toting, pan chewing, “fashion loving”, politician-cum-goon (yeah, they’re two different professions people!) of Chambal is one of the biggest female badasses in B-town. Not only does she defy the stereotypical female by her career choice and personality, but also when her rivals try to hurt her by attempting to kill her lover, she takes on the role of Prince Charming to rescue him from their clutches with swag.
Leading the chase against criminals sinister enough to give one a shiver, this Crime Branch Mumbai Senior Inspector kicks, punches, interrogates, strategizes, and brings down a drug and child trafficking syndicate on her own. And at no point is she a helpless damsel in distress, but a police officer with a fist.
A pregnant woman searching for her missing husband in a different country, continuing despite tremendous odds until she reaches her mission of….finding her husband? Let’s not give spoilers.
Though she may not have the proper ending she deserved, Janki was in all senses a very badass woman. Janki is a theater actress in love with her colleague who gets pregnant before marriage, and doesn’t care about society’s norms. But when her lover rejects her on false accusations, she has the guts to take her stand.
What more can we say about India’s Olympic boxing pride! Mary Kom, both the movie character and real person on whom it is based, faced tremendous odds but never gave up their passion. And even more impressive is that in a nation where women leave work after marriage, Mary Kom put India on the Olympic map after having two kids. Salute!
One of the boldest roles in that time, Chameli, sold to a brothel when young, developed into a tough, quick wit, and street-smart woman. She can smoke cigarettes with ease, doesn’t flinch while using street jargon, and refused to sleep with a customer having AIDS - yep she did all that while still not losing herself. And she sponsors a child’s education too!
Throughout the movie, Tanuja ‘Tanu’ Trivedi has shown everyone that she’s the boss. From dancing at her friend’s marriage to marrying Sharmaji (after initially rejecting him, though), Tanu’s swagger mode is always on.
Stranded amidst a village in Haryana and caught in a web of honor killing and murder, Meera rises to the challenge and handles the situation like a boss. She avenges her husband and is a slap in the face of an orthodox and a patriarchal society.
