If there is one thing that has the power to unite, ignite and offend 1.2 billion Indians at the same time, it is Bollywood. Bollywood is our religion and we worship our heroes. But howsoever much we may love our heroes, sometimes the sidekicks do steal the show. Here, are ten side characters from movies which made us completely overlook the leads.
1. Chatur Ramalingam – 3 Idiots
Now, come on. Each one us knows a silencer right? The know-it-all teachers’ pet. The dude who doesn’t know shit about the subject but still ends up scoring the highest marks. Silencer is by far the most ‘Chamatkari’ character we have seen on the silver screen.
did a phenomenal job living a character that makes us laugh till your belly hurts, and still somehow manage to annoy the shit out of us. Do change silencer, do change.
2. Kashi Bai-
In the generation where glancing at other girls calls for allegations of cheating,
as Kashi Bai redefined love for all of us. The way she fought with the world for the happiness of the man she loved, the happiness he shared with another woman, made us feel guilty and selfish. She held nothing against Mastani and never let the man they both loved destroy the unexpected bond these two women shared. It may have been the love story of Bajirao and Mastani, but we learned about love in its truest form only from Kashi Bai.
3. Kattappa- Bahubali
So, did you even realize that Sathyaraj as Kattappa was a sidelined character in the movie? He was not even present in the picture for almost the first half, but all we could think about after watching the movie was KATTAPPA NE BAHUBALI KO KYUN MARA?? This is one character who sure stole all the limelight, memes and tweets from the leads and made the whole movie seem about him. Seriously Kattappa, first you kill a man, and then you also steal all his fame. Why you doing this Kattappa, Why???
4. Farah Ali-
Dil Dhadakne Do
Farah Ali was not the girl of every guy’s dream; she was the girl with dreams of her own. She was a strong woman, and she knew she did not need to become a man for being strong. She ran away from her home to live her dream and inspired the hero to live up his. Though Bollywood generally fails at the depiction of strong women, this time they did it right?
as Farah Ali’s character sure deserved a movie of her own.
5. Bandya –
Chup Chup Ke
There has not been a single
character in a movie which has not made me go into bouts of embarrassing high-pitched laughter. With his impeccable comic timing, those amazing faces and that funny accent Bandya remains one of the most remembered comic characters in Bollywood. Managing to shine for comic delivery in a movie where you share space with
is in itself a feat
6. Circuit – Lage Raho Munna Bhai
Barney and Ted may have taught me bro-code in my college days. But back home, it was Munna Bhai and Circuit who showed me what Bhai-code means way before I knew of Ted and Barney.
acted as circuit. Circuit was the friends who helped his friend secure a dead body. This was a man who answered his calls with ‘Kaun hai bey.’ His unwavering loyalty for his bhai and the innocent brutal honesty made him the most loved characters of all time. We love you, Circuit.
"You are a good question, but your question hurt me.”
portrayal of Papi in
Tanu Weds Manu
stole all our hearts. The simplicity with which he just followed his friend everywhere and stood by his side in all the crazy shit he did, make me yearn for a friend like him. He helped his friend pursue a girl much younger to him and also didn’t forget to casually mention Lolita to him in the process. His quirky attitude and awesome one-liners make him one of the prime reasons why, Tanu Weds Manu garnered so much love.
“Pyar na hua, tumhara UPSC ka exam ho gya hai..10 sal se clear hi nhi ho rha hai.”
Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub
acted as Murari who was our hero’s best buddy. He always knew what Kundan was doing was wrong and out rightly told him so. But he still always helped and supported Kundan, because that is what friends are for. This outspoken, warm-hearted, frank-to-the-point-of-rudeness Banarasi guy surely deserves a story of his own.
9. Satyoki "Rana" Sinha- Kahani
For the first time on Indian Cinema, we had a police officer who was human just like the rest of us. He was neither the totally corrupt one not the impossibly ideal one.
acted as Satyoki Rana was a simple man, who performed his duty in the best way he could and also harboured some sweet feelings for the person he was helping. Though Vidya Balan’s performance in the movie was astonishingly brilliant, we couldn’t help but notice how underrated the talent of this fine actor is.
10. Viru Sahastrabuddhe
acted as VIRUS may be a little exaggeration, because he was the ultimate combination of all our worst teacher nightmares. The way his character grows from a strict and ruthless teacher to a guilty father and a proud mentor is an inspiration for all teachers out there who rank children according to some numbers. VIRUS showed us that it’s never too late to redeem your mistakes and try and become a better person. It is one of Boman Irani’s finest performances till date.
So, this was my list of the top 10 sidekicks who stole the show. Had some different ones in your mind? Tell us through your comments.
