The Assamese film industry is behind in distribution, numbers, and budget compared to other regional film industries like Kerala, Maharashtra, Kolkata, and Tamil Nadu. And hence, investors stay away from producing films that do not have much production value and have chances of less viewership. But independent filmmakers from Assam do not want to compromise with their unconventional storytelling vision. They are making films that are either self-produced or funded by an independent producer. The filmmakers do not wish to consider interference from any production house. 1. Village Rockstars

Village Rockstars, a coming-of-age drama Assamese film, is directed by Rima Sen. The film was India's official entry to the Oscars in 2018. The film revolves around a 10-year-old girl named Dhunu, who dreams of owning a real guitar. Village Rockstars also premiered at the 2017 TIFF (Toronto International Film Festival).
