Santawana Bardoloi was born on 10th September 1978 and brought up in Uzab Bazar, Guwahati, Assam, along with her five siblings. Growing up, she enjoyed reading books, watching plays and has also learned the basics of music. Once, she attended a music audition at Akash Vani in Guwahati. Though she didn’t get selected, it paved the way to become a performing artist in radio. She has worked on some of the great plays with many notable personalities at that time. Being good at studies, Santawana Bardoloi enrolled in a medical college.

She was famous for her storytelling skills in college. Later, after graduating from college in 1971, she became a pediatrician at a hospital in Dispur. She also runs a clinic. Santawana Bardoloi is married to Jayant Bardoloi, a doctor, and the couple has two children. SantawanaBardoloi starred in the famous Doordharshan series named TejaalGhora as an actress and has also done few television shows. Upon reading Indira Goswami’s novel, Dontal Haatir UiyeKhowa Haoda, she decided to adapt it as a movie. She took a month off from her work and started filming. It took her just a month to complete the filming, and the movie named Adajya got realized in 1996. The film is about the lives of three brahmin widows in Assam.

Santawana Bardoloi worked as the director, writer, and producer of the movie. Receiving lots of appreciation and acclaim, the film grabbed the National Award for Best Feature Film in Assamese at the 44th National Film Awards. Santawana Bardoloi became the third female director from Assam to win the honor. Following the movie’s success, Santawana Bardoloi took a break from the film industry to focus on the story of her next film. She made her comeback in 2017, after two decades, with the film Maj Rati Keteki. The movie received positive reviews for the storyline, direction, and Adil Hussain’s acting. At the 64th National Film Awards, Santawana Bardoloi won her second National Award in the Best Feature Film in the Assamese category. Her films were screened at several international film festivals, including Kerala International Film Festival and Kolkata International Film Festival. Santawana Bardoloi served as the jury panel member at the 8th NSFFI 2018.
