Daasarathi Krishnamacharya, also known as Daasarathi, was a prominent Telugu poet and writer born on July 22, 1925, in a middle-class Vaishnava Brahmin family in Chinnagudur, modern-day Telangana. He grew up in an orthodox Hindu household and was a scholar of Indian Puranas. He was fluent in Telugu, Sanskrit, and Tamil. Daasarathi studied at Khammam Government High School. He didn't pursue higher education and joined the fight against the autocratic Nizam rule in the Hyderabad Kingdom. Mahatma Gandhi and Kandukuri Veeresalingam influenced him, but he later joined the left-wing Andhra Mahashaba movement, where he traveled from village to village in Telangana to educate the public.

His subjects were the downtrodden, poor, exploited, and workers. After the democratic rule was established in Hyderabad, Daasarathi served in the government of Andhra Pradesh for some time. His first book, Agnidhara (Flowing Fire), was published in 1947, and he went on to write many other works, including Rudraveena (1950), Mahandrodyamam, Punarnavam, Amruthabishekam, Kavithapushpakam, and Ghalib Geethalu (1961).
Ghalib Geethalu is the Telugu translation of the poems of Urdu poet Mirza Asadullah Khan Ghalib. Daasarathi also composed lyrics for many Telugu films, with his debut movie being Vaagdanam. He wrote lyrics for approximately 2000 songs in the Telugu film industry. Daasarathi held the titles Abhyudhaya Kavi and Kalaprapurna. He received the Sahitya Academy Award for his poetic workbook Timiramto Samaram (Fight against Darkness) in 1974. He also worked for All India Radio Hyderabad and Madras (Chennai) as a prompter and retired in 1971.
He served as the Government Poet from 1971 to 1984 and was an emeritus producer for All India Radio and Doordarshan (Television). Daasarathi died on November 5, 1987, leaving a legacy of powerful and revolutionary poetry that continues to inspire generations of Telugu readers and writers. He is known as a writer who used his pen to give voice to the marginalized and advocate for social justice, equality, and freedom.
