Pithapuram Nageswara Rao was born in Pithapuram, East Godavari district, Andhra Pradesh, India, on May 5, 1930, to Viswanadham and Appayyamma. His last name is "Patharlagadda," but he has been known as Pithapuram since childhood. His dad was an excellent drama performer. He became interested in performing while still in school. In addition to acting, he used to perform for less skilled vocalists from behind the camera. He left his home and traveled to Madras to try his luck in the film industry. At 16, he was allowed to sing in Mangala Sutram (1946). Later, he performed vocals in the Gemini Studios film Chandralekha (1948), becoming well-known in the industry. He performed countless songs, mainly for comedic characters.
The 1962 film Ayyayo Jebulo Dabbulu Polyene and Maa Oollo Oka Paduchundi (Ave Kallu, 1967) As Challani Ramayya Chakkani Seetamma, he last performed in Bommarillu (1978). He was an Indian playback singer who contributed to the early Telugu film industry.
