Vidya Harikrishna

Expressing yourself through music is one of the arduous forms, but some artists do it very splendidly. Also, India’s Classical Music is one of the country’s ancient possession. One of the popular vocalists who is excelled in Carnatic music is one and only Vidya Harikrishna, who is widely recognized because of her euphonious voice. She began her musical age at a very young age, i.e., five. She was born and raised in the family of Carnatic classical music lovers, due to which her childhood was filled with this type of music only. Her interest in classical music evolved as time passed and gave her motivation to build a career in particularly this area.

Talking about her family, her father, N Balasubramanian, who sings ‘Namasankeerthanam’ (bhajans), on the other side her mother, Geeta Balan, who sings and plays the Veena. She was born with music in her genes, and therefore she began her journey under the tutelage of Smt Sampoorni Venugopal and Smt Radha Santhanam. She has been giving performances for a very long time now and is gaining attention from people worldwide. For around 20 years, Vidya was focusing on being part of the numerous competitions called ‘Sabhas,’ which mainly aimed at boosting classical music mostly amidst the city. But, her perspective is changing now. On the positive point, she believes that modernization and advanced technology have helped immensely increase the reach of classical music worldwide.

She has also said that accessibility to the latest technology has allowed artists to record and share their performances on distinct platforms. It has assisted the classical lovers also to learn and practice by sitting at home only. Despite this, she despises that classical music is being overshadowed after the arrival of western forms of music in every part of the country. She is scared of the thought that one-day Classical music will completely vanish from our surroundings. Vidya does everything from her side to spread Classical music worldwide. Furthermore, she is learning new dimensions and aspects of music under Padma Bhushan Shri "T V Gopalakrishnan."
