V.S.Achuthanadan was born on October 20th, 1923, in Alappuzha District, Kerala. He was born to Sankaran and Accamma. He lost his mother and Father at an earlier age. He stopped his school education after finishing seventh standard. He then started his career by working at a tailoring shop by helping his elder brother. After that, he moved to coir factory for meshing coir to make ropes. He then started his political entry by doing Agriculture works in Kuttanadu. He worked with the fullest dedication in coir factory even at the age of sixteen under A.K. Gopalan and A.V. Kunjambu. Though he lacked initial education, he became very dedicated towards reading and was sincere for his works.
His freedom movement was begun by Krishna Pillai, after which he became an active participant of Freedom movement and Communist Movement. He started in front for the Freedom Struggle against the policies of C.P.Ramasamy. By October 28th, 1946, he was arrested and locked up. He almost spent five years in Jail. Achuthanandan played a crucial role for Land Struggles in Kerala. After that, he became a strong opposition party in the Kerala Assembly with a Good Public support. He entered into his political career with the help of Trade Union activities, and later he joined State Congress by the year 1983. By 1940 he joined with Communist Party of India.
He played the role of State Secretariat Member of the Communist Party for the year 1957. He then became the Secretary of the Kerala State Committee between 1980 and 1982. He played several roles in his Political career. By 1985, he became the member of the Politburo. He was elected as a Member of Kerala Legislative Assembly for the year 1967, 1970, 1991, 2001, 2006, 2011 and 2016. He also became opposition party in the Kerala Assembly for the years 1992 to 1996, 2001 to 2006 and 2011 to 2016. He also played the role of editor for the magazine Deshabhimani daily and for the CPI (M) Mouthpiece which was issued in Malayalam.
Between April and May 2006, He participated in the Assembly election of Kerala and competed and won against Satheesan Pancheeni. He also became the Chief Minister of Kerala with about twenty minister member Cabinet. He was the oldest chief minister of the whole India. He contributed several good welfares for the state of Kerala. He planned and initiated several IT parks in Kollam and Thrissur. He also provides support for the major developments in Kochi Info Park and Trivandrum Techno Park; IT parks in Alappuzha and in Kozhikode which is a cyber park. He also motivates for the development of Tourism circuit in Ashtamudi.
