Sultan Ahmed Sultan Ahmed, born in 1938 in Lucknow during the B >> Read More... Ismail is an Indian environmentalist and biologist who studies the ecology of soil. Sultan Ahmed was born in 1951 in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. He went to The New College in Chennai for his higher education and also has a research degree – Doctor of Science (D.Sc.) in Zoology to his credit from the University of Madras. His research has been focused on methods for exploiting native earthworm species to recycle biodegradable wastes into fertilizer and on soil waste management. Ismail is a member of the State Development Policy Council and is a part of the Science and Technology Department in the Government of India. He tries to inculcate vermicomposting in the curriculum of students so that they adopt it as a part of their lifestyle. He has given numerous lectures concerning soil bioremediation, vermicomposting, and environmentalism.
He is also presently associated with the Consumer Association of Penang (CAP) to educate the organic farmers of Malaysia regarding the same. He has been felicitated by the Department of Environment, Government of Tamil Nadu for his efforts in creating awareness about the environment, with the Arignar Anna Award (2005). He has published several books and research papers in this context including The Earthworm Book, Composting through earthworms, The Organic Farming Reader, Environmental Studies for Class II (co-authored by Ismail, Sundaram, Gopalan, and S.A.), Vermitech: Worm powered technology and Vermicology: The Biology of Earthworms among others.
