T H Subash Chandran is a well-known Carnatic (South Indian Classical) singer and drummer teacher. Among his students are top instrumentalists V. Selvaganesh, N. Ganesh Kumar Bio coming soon... >> Read More... , and N. Ramakrishnan. He is a master of the "ghatam" and widely recognized as the greatest living exponent of vocal percussion. His father is T. R. Harihara Sharma and his younger brother is T. H. Vinayakaram, a master ghatam player. He served as the Vice-Principal of “Sri Jaya Ganesh Tala Vadya Vidyalaya.” He instructed students for four years and worked at the Sri Venkateshwara Temple in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA (1989-1992). The Millennium Festival in the United Kingdom chose this work as one of the top five from nearly 2000 submissions worldwide.
He hails from Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. Subash, a multi-talented musician, has gained international acclaim for his astonishing performances at the United Nations, the Festivals of India in the United States, Russia, Japan, Switzerland, and many other venues. He has traveled worldwide, including South America, Canada, Germany, Japan, the United States, and other European countries. He composed music for famous Indian dancer MS. Chandralekha's contemporary dance productions "Mahakal," "Raaga," and "Yantra" and performed in Kala Sangam's "Global Echoes" with renowned Chitra veena artist Shri Ravikiran in collaboration with BBC Philharmonic Education and Community members.
Subash Chandra has also performed with all-time great musicians Stephen Grapheli and Yehudi Menuhin, well-known instrumentalists Max Roach and Tony Williams, and renowned Indian artists Dr. L Subramaniam, Dr. Bala Murali Krishna, Smt. M S Subbulakshmi, and U Srinivas. He has appeared in several albums and CDs. In 2007, he released his first ghatam instructional DVD. Unfortunately, he died at the age of 74 in West Mambalam, Chennai, India. He developed a fever and chest congestion for a few days before his death. He belongs to a musical family and had received several awards and titles throughout his career, including the title "Asthana Vidwan" of “Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam.”
